This piece was originally part of a project focused on low-key lighting, which plays with shadows and minimal lighting. Similar to a chiaroscuro technique in painting, the image is nearly engulfed by darkness, but there is just enough light to accentuate the forehead, nose, and lips of the model. Many photos with low-key lighting tend to focus on faces the most, but I wanted the viewers to focus more on the model’s hair as it’s being flipped back. The model is dressed in black and turns away from the camera while the hair moves in the opposite direction, capturing a quiet yet intense figure.
