Statement:
Inspired by ancient depictions of one of the most iconic women in history, this piece, painted with acrylic paint on canvas attempts to playfully reintroduce a biblical figure into the 21st century. While the composition and subject reference traditional images, this piece is made modern by her direct gaze and informal body language which were not suitable for a lady in times of the past. While The Virgin Mary became an icon thousands of years ago, her importance has remained through time. As one of the most important women in history, she should be depicted in a way that communicates her importance to its current and modernized viewers.
