Statement
This piece, titled “Friend” combines beauty with the macabre. With darker tones and bright reds, “Friend” gives off a sense of unease. I chose to do a self portrait to convey that sense of unease and discomfort, as I particularly do not enjoy creating them, but force myself to do them anyways. For the composition I chose to have the subjects’ face forward, staring straight into the viewer to heighten the sense of disquiet. It was a part of a project regarding losing control and gaining control. I implemented that quite linearly as the subjects in the painting (a red figure and myself), represent chaos and control from left to right.
